Theme – Go Green Go Clean

Quiz competition for students and public lectures

The Earth Day 2018 celebration was organised by  Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India on 28 April 2018 at the Gandhi Bhavan, in Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram. The programme consisted of quiz competition for school students and public lectures.

Quiz Competition

The quiz competition was organised for students of Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary levels from different schools in Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala.

A total of 40 schools participated for the quiz competition. During the primary screening a written examination was conducted. Based on the marks received top five teams from each category were selected for the quiz competition for primary, secondary and senior secondary levels. Each team consisted of two students.

Dr.C.K.Peethambaran, Former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University was the quiz master for the Primary level students, Er.Suresh Babu BV, Accredited Energy Auditor, BEE was the quiz master for the Secondary level and Dr.K.Murugan, Former Principal, Govt. Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram conducted the quiz competition for the Senior  Secondary  level.

The subject areas covered in the quiz competition were

  • Primary Level             – Natural resources
  • Secondary Level             – Energy resources
  • Senior Secondary Level – Global warming and its effects

 Public Lectures:

As a part of the programme two public lectures were also organised.

  1. Dr.K.P.Thrivikramji, Former Head of the Department of Geology, University of Kerala

Dr.Thrivrimji introduced the subject of mineralogy to the students. He also explained in detail the role of different minerals in the human activities. The ill effects of overexploitation of natural resources and its harmful effects on future generation was also an area covered in the talk. The green house effect and the role of students can play in mitigating its ill effects by the student community was also dealt in detail.

He gave a lecture on the focal theme Go Green Go Clean. According to him, people must be educated on low carbon initiatives and encouraged to decrease their carbon footprint. People must come forward to create and preserve greenery all around them. They must also adopt green fuels and lifestyle that does not harm the environment.

The programme was attended by school children’s, parents, teachers and public. After the lecture there were also interactive sessions with the experts and audience.
