INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
BACKGROUND
Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Thiruvananthapuram acknowledged by the United Nations University located in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot works proactively with community stakeholders to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across all aspects of education and learning. RCE Thiruvananthapuram focuses on creating platforms and opportunities for strategic thinking and knowledge exchange in the areas of biodiversity, traditional knowledge agriculture, disaster management and energy conservation. RCE Thiruvananthapuram located in the south Indian state of Kerala has pioneered several initiatives and works along with the community, youth and decision makers to bring strategic improvements in all fields of sustainable development.
SCOPE OF WORK
RCE, Thiruvananthapuram is involved in the following projects from which the interns can choose according to his/her interest.
- Conduct scientific study and document on socio-ecological changes of Vellayani Lake
Vellayani lake is the second largest freshwater lake in the State. At present, the lake is being ravaged by pollution and large-scale reclamation. The Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (the parent Organisation of RCE), is involved in studies pertaining to the following subjects. The interns can select the area of interest from the following topics that are listed below.
1.1 A study on the Historical and Cultural Perspective of Vellayani Lake
1.2 Environmental Issues and Degradation of the Lake Ecosystem
1.3 Lake and Sustainable livelihoods of stakeholder
1.4 Conservation and Management Action Plan
1.5 Biodiversity
- To conduct a study on the working of NGOs with special reference to CISSA
- To conduct a study on the livelihood patterns of Tribal Communities in different Panchayats in Trivandrum District.
- Documentation of International and National rules and regulations on Organic Agriculture with special reference to International Trade.
DELIVERABLES
→ Final report with the compilation of all assignments undertaken during the internship period.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
→be enrolled in a second university degree programme (Master Degree)
→be enrolled in any academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor Degree)
→have graduated with a university degree
Field of study: policy, education, climate change, sustainable development, economics, law, social sciences or related fields.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
→ Proficiency in written and spoken English
→ Knowledge of local language would be an asset.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT, FINANCE AND DURATION
→ The interns will be under the supervision of specific project Coordinators.
→ Internship Programme does not provide financial support to interns. The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and will have to make his/her own arrangements for accommodation, travel, etc.
→The duration of the internship is one month, with the possibility of extension. The intern will be required to bring their own laptop.
