Ozone day celebrations 2018

“Ozone day celebrations 2018” was organized by Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) with the support of Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and National Green Corps (NGC)on 22nd September 2018 at HSS for Girls Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram. As a part of the celebration, an awareness seminar on the theme“Keep cool and carry on! The Montreal protocol” and a painting competition for junior and senior level students were held.

Inauguration

The welcome speech was delivered by Shri.Renjithkumar BV, HSS for Girls Venganoor, followed by the presidential address by Dr.C.K.Peethambaran,Former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University. In the speech,they emphasized about the need for making people aware about the climate change.

Shri. Venganoor Satheesh, Vice President, Venganoor GramaPanchayatinaugurated the ozone day celebrations2018.Considering the climatic change taking place in Kerala, the state should adopt a development culture focusing on the efficient use of limited resource and its sustainable conservation” said Venganoor Satheesh. He appreciated the efforts taken by the CISSA for making the event a huge success.

Shri.Hareendran Nair S, PTA President, HSS for Girls for Venganoor and Dr. CS Ravindran, Former Principal Scientist, ICAR-CTCRIdelivered the felicitation speech.

Vote of thanks for the function was delivered by Dr. P.N Krishnan,Former Scientist, JNTBGRI & Emeritus Scientist, Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences, Kozhikode.He conveyed his sincere thanks to each and every one who worked for the success of the programme.

 Painting competition for students

Theme:Ozone depletion and climate change

A total of 182 students from 53schools participated for the painting competition.Out of this 84 students were from senior level and 98 students from the junior level.The theme of the painting competition was “ozone depletion and climate change”. Students were from Govt./Aided/Unaided/CBSE/ICSE/Private schools in Neyyattinkara Educational district.A panel of four judges valued the paintings and awarded the prizes. Apart from 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, the judges recommended two consolation prizes for each categories.

Awareness seminar

Focal theme: Keep cool and carry on! The Montreal protocol

The awareness session was started with a talk by Dr.A Bijukumar, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Keralaon the topic “ozone depletion and biodiversity”. He remarked that climate change is triggered by the harmful gases which lead to ozone layer depletion and that the state government and public should work towards environmental literacy activities. According to him, emergence of the next generation of environmentalists from school campuses is the need of the hour.

After the first session it was followed by a talk on “Montreal protocol and its impact on climate change” by Dr. P.N Krishnan. His talk was on the significance of Montreal protocol and the possible impact on the global climate change. According to him this is one of the most widely followed UN resolutions in the world. Since the present day children are the tomorrow’s rule makers and leaders, they should know in detail the importance and significance of the protocol. Several studentsinteracted with Dr. Krishnan regarding the implementation of this protocol in India and various other developing and developed countries

The next session was taken by Dr.C.K.Peethambaran,Former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University, on the topic “Effect of climate change on food security”.

He stressed the importance of climate change on the production and productivity of various crops in India. According to him there is going to be a drastic reduction in the production of rice and various other crops cultivated in Kerala. The temperature increases further from the present levels. The carbon dioxide level sometimes will increase the production of certain crops but it will have a deleterious effect on other crops. He also explained the various greenhouse gases and its significance in crop production.

Prize distribution- Painting competition

Cash awards, Memento, Books and certificates were distributed to the winners of the competition. Certificate of participation was given to all the students who attended the programme.
