Celebrating World Environment Day 2019, Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), in association with Dept. of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, with the support of KSCSTE, organised a Seminar on Pollution Reduction for Combating Climate Change and Inter Collegiate Quiz on Environment on 20th June 2019 at Dept. of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, Karyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram. The theme of WED 2019 is Air Pollution.
The programme was launched with tree planting by Dr.Katharine A Owens, Associate Professor, University of Hartford, USA, followed by World Environment Day messages by eminent persons in the field of environment and biodiversity viz.,Dr.A.Biju Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Kerala, Dr.A.G.Pandurangan, Former Director, JNTBGRI, Dr.C.K.Peethambaran, Former Director of Research, KAU and Dr.K.Padmakumar, Former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies.
Following WED messages, three lectures were delivered:
i.Marine Debris with special reference to plastics in water bodies
Dr. Katharine A Owens, Associate Professor, University of Hartford, USA & Fulbright Nehru Fellow, University of Kerala.
Dr Katherine spoke on the marine debris issue which is not discussed in India in detail and the need for a stronger policy for managing marine debris from India, and more concerted awareness programmes to highlight the issue.

ii.Air pollution and Human Health
Dr. Sureshkumar C, Consultant, Govt. Taluk Hospital, Parassala
He exposed the audience to the various types of air pollution and its impact on human health. He stressed the need of Extended Product Responsibility in reducing the air pollution.
iii.Energy audit in academic institutions
Er. Suresh Babu B.V, Accredited Energy Auditor, BEE, Govt. of India
He explained the pollution with various types of energy used in homes, educational institutions and industries and energy audit.
After lunch, Inter Collegiate Quiz on Environment was conducted in University of Kerala and 15 teams from Kerala and one participant from Odisha participated in the event. The preliminary round of the completion was conducted by Dr.Survana Devi and a total of six teams were selected for the final round. Dr.A.Biju Kumar, Professor and Head of the Dept. of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala was the quiz master for the final round. The winning team received mementos, books and certificates.
